| I bet some of you didn't know that Capsule Computers (the full name of Capcom) had its own video game console in the 1990s, right? Surprise! The CPS Changer is an attempt by Capcom to bring its arcade games into the living room. The black unit in the above picture, believe it or not, is the main console with the same kind of controller sockets as those of the SNES. I bet you've probably figured that the huge gray thing is the game cartridge. In fact, the game cartridges of the CPS Changer are actually arcade PCBs (Printed Circuit Boards if you don't know any computer terminology) put into special plastic shells for home use, and they're the ones with all the circuitry and such. The black main unit is also actually a SuperGUN (an encased one in this case, no joke intended), a machine that allows people to play arcade game motherboards on their TV. The hardware is based on the CPS-1 arcade system made by Capcom in the mid-to-late 1980s. They were sold as package deals consisting of the console itself, one CPS Fighter joystick controller, the hook-ups, and Street Fighter' Turbo, all for 39,800 Yen! Additional games costed 20,000 Yen each. Only eleven games were released for it. The last game released for the 'Changer is a back-ported version of Street Fighter ZERO (Alpha) for a premium 35,000 Yen. | |
